I am __name__, an involved Minnesota citizen and supporter of an up-and-coming non-profit organization called STAR House. I am writing to bring to your attention a critical need in our community—one that has been successfully addressed in Minneapolis for over 40 years but remains unmet in Saint Paul: the establishment of a crisis nursery. Every parent knows what it’s like to face a crisis, and can remember the many pieces – money, people, a vehicle, etc - that came together to get them through. Now think, if you took away those resources, how would you survive? Many families in our own community don’t have access to those same resources, and when a crisis arises, the results can be catastrophic. STAR House aims to change that. We provide safe, caring, and trauma-informed overnight care for children under the age of 7 for families in crisis. This lets kids be kids and gives the parents a pocket of space and time to navigate whatever they are facing. This approach empowers parents, strengthens families, and reduces trauma for everyone involved. Nothing like this currently exists in Ramsey County, and the need is great. Ramsey County has the highest rates of poverty, teen pregnancy, and homelessness in the metro area. These are our neighbors, our friends, and our children's classmates. They are people we see every day, and they need our help.
As STAR House works to open its doors, they need your support! STAR House recently received building code and zoning assessment approval from the city of Saint Paul and is working through the licensing process with the state of Minnesota. As final approval is received, STAR House is ready to move forward with some required construction and begin the hiring process.
